Dvi,Mini display port help & Question

hello,i picked older monitor free add on mid 2010 imac 21.5" , curious before spend money,is there difference between mini dvi & mini displayport? both work imac or mini displayport? thank you!
 

you need mini-displayport-to-dvi adapter (generic ones work) if dvi display.

micro-dvi/mini-dvi , mini-displayport vastly different in terms of protocol, general support , connector interfaces.

advised not able watch hdcp protected content on dvi display. hdcp protected content can watched on imac, or connected display displayport, mini-displayport, or hdmi input.
