Installing Lion on External HDD

i try out lion without compromising current installation on macbook pro. have 2gb external hard drive use time machine backups. have lot of free space on it, allocate of space try out lion. how can without losing time machine backups?
 

use diskutility create partition on backup drive, time machine backups have own place , have separate place install lion.
