Gmail not working with Mac Mail

for reason on past 24 hours, mail has stopped connecting gmail. deleted account (stupidly) , now, when try add gmail account mail, refuses account when know username , password correct. ideas? not aware of having done in either mail or gmail might have caused it.

running version ver 4.5 in sl.
