Mail will not Quit when shutting down

since installing os x lion i'm getting few shutdown issues.
when attempt shut down or restart, i'm getting following error message:

"you haven't been logged out because application mail failed quit. try logging out again, quit mail , choose apple menu > log out."

i'm wondering if lion or mail issue? i've got plenty of ram (8gb)
body else getting similar issue? :confused:
 

i've had issues mail.app time time, on snow leopard imagine there on lion well. have tried use force quit rid of mail.app? if mail.app isn't playing nicely, use third party email program thunderbird. mail.app can't in way if never launch it. btw, use mail.app everyday use have thunderbird installed , have used handful of times when mail.app wasn't acting right.
