Can't get surround sound working

hi guys.

got g5 power mac here running 10.5.8 , logitech 5.1 z-5500 digital speakers, connected digital optical toslink cable.

problem can't set speakers surround sound. in audio midi setup, can select stereo, , not 5.1 option.

in system preferences i've selected "digital out - optical digital-out port". that's fine. music plays fine through speakers.

in audio midi setup, choices have in default output , system output drop down boxes "built-in audio".

under that, in audio output area, source have "digital out" selected.

clicking on configure speakers, have set multichannel, allows me select stereo drop-down box.

the audio midi setup surround sound used when have soundcard capable of outputting on multiple channels.

happening here digital optical out (s/pdif) can carry 2 channel pcm (what seeing in audio midi setup) or compressed surround sound (dolby digital, dts) sent reciever (logitech z-5500d).

if have dvd's surround sound easiest way of checking this. play dvd in built in dvd player making sure you've selected surround sound track if dvd has option, might need go dvd player's preferences , on disc setup tab set audio output.

happen see on control pod of z-5500d effect changes "dts digital" , surround sound. it's been while since last used logitech z-5500d's might show else on pod.

setup surround sound sources encoded dolby digital or dts dvds.
