Sharing data across several Macs

we've been using laptops exclusively @ home few years now, works reasonably well. we've reached point gets troublesome keep data on laptops: it's stuff fit on typical laptop hard drives, , it's hard sync different machines.

how other people solving problem? what's way store data (mostly photos managed in iphoto, , music managed in itunes) centrally , share between different laptops? , of course there should backup data well. here's options can think of:

  • buy nas solution (any recommendations?). how can solve backup issue?
  • set simple server using mac mini external drive. backup done via time machine.
  • buy time capsule data, , 1 backing time capsule. possible?

input, better ideas? think apple needs offer ihomeserver kind of solution. cloud not answer everything...

a 4-bay nas raid 5 should adequate. slam in 4x2tb , 6tb of usable space raid 5. raid 5 array can compensate 1 dead drive (thus lose capacity of 1 drive) should enough backup. of course, if 1 drive fails, need replace asap avoid data loss.
