i've googled long , hard (twss) yet find solution allow me perform reasonably simple task without messing music library.
i've moved new machine, , have copied entire itunes library because folder structure different (used store media on separate partition, stored in home folder), i'm left few unsatisfactory options:
- continue using old itunes library has tracks , playlists preserved doesn't know of files located.
- delete , re-add tracks library, means itunes knows wipes of precariously chosen playlists.
- do 'move' , 'consolidate' method copy of tracks new location mess personal taste in folder structure/file naming believe have check 'allow itunes organise music folders' (uh, no itunes, had massive mp3 collection long before glint in steve jobs' eye....)
- start new itunes library scratch (??!)
missing obvious? there's got easy way this, right? want change start of file path in itunes library database instead of reading /mediadrive/music/itunes etc reads /home/music/itunes. of other folder paths should same....
way this??
well, can point itunes new library holding shift/option while opening it. not sure if current situation give go if havent already. ask location of new library file.
@ end of day, have recommend door number 3. when moved itunes swore , struggled how stupid , every time moved damn folder, give me dreaded explanation mark. cures itunes , stood for.
1 day gave , clicked consolidate library button , checked off "let itunes manage library". took getting used (i , organized folders self), in end, if let itunes thing way easier , nicer when have change computers or backup library.
going through same thing iphoto. coming picasa, cant understand why apple cant monitor folders, , when changes, update (as picasa does). seems once again, if let iphoto work , stop messing folders, life easier. seems apple want forget file system in general, might way go.
