How to connect video camera with Mac

hi all,

have older type of video camera sony , tried transfer video macbook pro. connected them usb nothing happened:confused:. mac did not recognised video camera. need download software?

tried option "transfer camera" in imovie, not find video.

what exact video camera have? model should @ least listed on bottom of camcorder?
have "i.link" or "dv-out" port (shown in graphic below "fw400 4-pin" port)?

if so, need appropriate firewire cable shown in graphic above.

5.1 audio out with hdmi? MBP 15inch 2011

i've gone through 2 adapters , endless hours of trying 5.1 audio receiver via hdmi or optical , can't seem work. well, let me correct myself. got work in osx whenever start vlc audio goes 7.1 random configuration comes out of side speaker. can't seem dts or ac3 consistently output vlc receiver. if have use optical don't care want work. got normal audio not dts or ac3 work osx. using bootcamp , windows 7 got vlc output ac3 via optical receiver. never got hdmi sound output in other 2 channel in windows. anyway if can spread light on how accomplish appreciated @ moment using http://www.kanexlive.com/v2 claim pass uncompressed 5.1/7.1 dts , ac3 through. entire thing frustrating. technical support laughable.   bump   Forums Macs Notebooks ...
