Can I safely unplug a USB hard drive while my laptop is closed?

if laptop closed, can unplug time machine usb backup drive, or must open laptop , "eject" drive properly? have been doing latter careful. thanks.
 

definitely best open , eject. unmounts drive don't have data errors, plus unplugging drive while computer asleep wake up.

What's the max amount of RAM an iMac can have to run BootCamp & Parallels Windows 7?
