Can a 27" iMac be used as an external monitor for a 13" MacBook Pro?

if buy mini displayport mini displayport cable, can plug 13" macbook pro 27" imac , use imac external monitor? (similar buying led cinema display...) if so, how work? (i send windows 7 vm(parallels) it..
 

depends on model. 2011 imacs require tbolt equipped source.

What's the max amount of RAM an iMac can have to run BootCamp & Parallels Windows 7?
