OS X - Raid 1 - Software vs. Hardware

i'm looking create raid1 setup. run 2008 mbp, , i'm out of school it's connected external monitor , keyboard/mouse. i'd create raid1 backup/archive of digital media (family videos, pictures, hi-8 transfers, etc.). choose raid1 can have dual hdds , have them mirrored it's more reliable (if i'm not mistaking?)

looking @ these 2 options in head.

1. have software raid via os x , buy dual-bay external enclosure , use via usb.

2. buy dedicated dual-bay enclosure built-in raid1.

because it's more of archiving data, plan on running when need read/write data , otherwise keeping powered off.

i'd know pro/con/suggestions/limitations/corrections/etc. of both setups , 1 better choice.
