Primary desktop background won't change

not sure if lion specific or not, desktop background on primary display has changed solid gray , can't change it. can bring preference panel it, , click on different backgrounds, nothing changes. can change background on secondary display... thoughts?
 

same here. second screen changes, primary desktop seems washed out solid gray.

What's the max amount of RAM an iMac can have to run BootCamp & Parallels Windows 7?
