Problem with old iMac

i have clients old imac 4,1 model. having issues beach ball spinning time, airport stopped working, did.

tried resetting pram, made no difference.
started fixing permissions , found lot of errors.
stopped that, booted off sl install disc, tried repair drive, failed, said backup files, reformat , reinstall.

when try boot it, white screen apple logo comes , @ bottom of screen there looks long progress indicator, starts show progress , whole machine powers off. sl disc still in machine. not pressing keys during boot.

should do?

have half mind open up, pull drive, put new drive in, reinstall sl , plug original drive in external copy files back.

 

take apple. don't try , diy, damage more.

What's the max amount of RAM an iMac can have to run BootCamp & Parallels Windows 7?
