What is this app? (apple remote/software related)

i once went someone's house saw them use apple remote , sort of remote app on mac mini following.

pressing menu or play button on remote bring sort of root directory (which included several folders had chosen in directory - movies, tv shows, music) - not front row or videos/music stored on itunes/bought via itunes.

these folders on mac mini , instead of bringing front row , itunes related music/movies, navigate through list of folders (eg. tv shows > 24 > season 1) until got episode, , click on episode/movie/music file wanted watch/listen, bring list of programs view/listen file (vlc, quicktime, etc etc). once he'd chosen program, file play on program.

of done apple remote , mac mini , wasn't front row, different software/app different gui. in fact, small transparent grey box appeared in middle of desktop (not proper window x,- , + buttons) , disappeared once had made selection.


me out app/software this done with?
