Connecting guitar to MacBook Pro

hi guys, title says all. want able record electric guitar directly on garageband on mb pro.

here's have:

enough "hardware"?

tried connecting guitar directly both external speakers , headphones jack , tried running garageband , recording sound no go. doing wrong?

need software plugin or hardware lack problem?

What's the max amount of RAM an iMac can have to run BootCamp & Parallels Windows 7?
