First Time Sync with New PC - Data Backup?

my girlfriend has iphone 3gs , doesn't have computer on set (actually, says it's never been set on computer, i'm not sure that's possible unless can temporary set-up in apple store).

so, now, it's way behind on software updates , needs synced/updated. there little added content on basic apps comes with, there not insignificant matter of contacts.

happens when hooks iphone unknown computer? automatically wipe , reinstall everything? or can contacts prior reinstall (which she's worried about)?

What's the max amount of RAM an iMac can have to run BootCamp & Parallels Windows 7?
