my imac hangs on boot up

when boot imac, white/grey screen etc , shows scroll bar scroll across, thought might updateing alas after waiting 3 hours screen n imac still in same position.

cant seem access anything, appears obviuos havent booted yet.

ideas appreciated

What's the max amount of RAM an iMac can have to run BootCamp & Parallels Windows 7?
