Best way to back up a hard drive without time machine

i trying friend save files before hdd fails him on powerbook. best way go grabbing many files possible without using time machine?

entire mac folder?
 

do have mac well? if boot target disk mode firewire cable , use mac image drive disk utility.

What's the max amount of RAM an iMac can have to run BootCamp & Parallels Windows 7?
