24" iMac Display Backlight Failure

this afternoon, issue developed on imac 24" (mid-2007) top half of display seemed flickered , burned out. looks dramatic gradient dark light. haven't found support documents or discussions address issue this.

tried restarting computer , no avail, problem persists. tried resetting smc , booting install cd, , did not fix problem either. basic apple hardware test did not identify wrong (i did not extended test).

suspecting backlight in display failing. wanted see if else encountered issue , thoughts possibly wrong. afraid imac might genius bar bound if no solution exists. i'm scared of repair costs might be...

thoughts?

thanks,
maikeru-san

p.s. i've read in places inverter issue rather display issue. in cases have noticed when start display sleep, full backlit display comes moment before top half goes dark again.... again, thoughts?

it inverter or backlight tube itself. either way think apple tell you'll need new lcd panel don't separate these parts.

sorry.

there ways around of course. sourced inverters original 24" white imac while ago. swapping out backlight tube bit of pain though. if in uk, send me pm , might able source and/or fit inverter you, otherwise you'll have around yourself.
