Videos shot on Sony Camcorder won't play on Mac, How to Convert?

i shot 20 or videos yesterday on sony handycam dcr-sr68 , want edit them in imovie. when plug camera macbook pro comes usual when click on actual video file says file type isn't supported. videos mpeg. there free way can convert these file type necessary edit them in imovie? help.
