New Install: Time Machine and Software Update Woes

hey all,

various reasons i've done full clean install on imac using snow leopard.

since i've had couple of issues i'm wondering if can me with.

software update checks *very* slowly, if @ all, stalling on around 5% of progress bar before either telling me there's no updates (when know there are) or taking age crawl along. i've deleted relevant .plist files , restarted countless times. connection's not 'fast' @ around 1.5-2mb should acceptable, , has been in past.



secondly - time machine - i've never tried before figured time would, keep getting failed backups - again, deleted relevant preferences, reformatted hard drive appropriate format - 'obvious' stuff think.


able offer thoughts?
