IMovie quit unexpectedly. HELP?!

i have bought cannon legria fs306 camcorder, seeing cannon 'so helpfully' don't include software compatible mac, advised cannon customer services use imovie.
unfortunately imovie app keeps on closing down start use it. did have working while , managed import videos camera not issue camera.
doesn't want know , keeps quitting!
have tried logging in guest user , still same thing happens.

have searched forums until i've fallen asleep @ desk! fixes have come across seem pretty complicated me.
have called apple support , because imac on 2 years old want me cough £35 support!

if can solve issue i'd eternally grateful!
