Macbook Not Booting After Update

talk bad luck!
friend left switzerland couple of days ago. lands there , while skyping today, tell update snow leopard via software update since last update got 10.6.3.

texts me few minutes ago macbook pro (mid 09, 13'') not booting up: apple logo , spinning wheel stay there.
never happened me have no idea can being way in switzerland mbp laptop , no installation discs her.

told boot safe mode that's first thing comes mind , attempt disk repair there. if fails, should next step be?
 

how long did let spinning wheel spin?

What's the max amount of RAM an iMac can have to run BootCamp & Parallels Windows 7?
