Melted Charger

so put iphone on charger(ipad charger) other night do, when woke , went unplug it, wouldn't come out. tugged little harder , came out. inspected cable , found deformed/melted , had "charred" marks on it. looked inside of port , saw connector in iphone "charred" well. phone still works(3gs) wont charge. phone way past warranty i'm not banking on them fix or replace it, feel in way apple should considering i'm using apple charger. have genius bar appointment in couple hours, advice on should when talk them?

p.s. if in wrong using ipad charger let me know, hate idiot when walk in there, i've read on here it's fine use , it's worked fine several months don't see how issue.

if it's ipad charger walk on , grab 1 shelf. states on box ipad iphone , ipod.
