Ubuntu on an iBook g4

recently hard drive on ibook g4 crashed beyond repair diskwarrior or disk utility. don't want buy new hard drive , replace it, i've heard pain, , can buy laptop used on ebay dirt cheap. low , behold, want try running ubuntu on it, without using hd.

have run live cd of ubuntu 10.04 ppc, correct version ibook believe, tried install os onto 4gb flash drive. installed succesfully, problem is, can't boot usb 2.0 drive on startup.

running out of ideas how without using internal hd, want use laptop taking notes in class. , don't require space.

out there have ideas on how can this?
muchly appreciated.

had idea of maybe installing ubuntu 10.04 onto dl 8.5gb dvd, i'm not sure if work.
i'm pretty new macs, don't know i'm doing. great, thanks. :)

ppcs finicky booting off usb sticks, if around can find information on it.

it work, wouldn't make difference. computer read 700mb of data on disc, can't write rest of disc.

i'd replace hdd, it's pain, it's challenge ;)

if usb stick gets knocked out while you're taking notes? destroyed. think hdd worth it. consider putting 8gb compact flash card in hard drive, should cheaper.
