Laggy i5 2011 MBP

i'm on second 13" mbp i5 2011. first 1 mistakenly feared had heating issues. upon returning within 14-day window, discovered first not such anomaly, replacement became toasty under similar load. while, have suspected replacement not snappy first one. may sound nitpicking, applications take jump or 2 more open , stacks don't emerge dock aplomb. currently, have 172 mb psd file open minimized , whole system sluggish , not quite responsive. lags when switching 1 tab on firefox next. dictionary app pops open takes few hops , itunes tracks skip @ times. normal? sound issue sorted out ssd?

could number of things. lack of ram, spotlight indexing drive, rogue process eating away ressources, etc.

there wasn't heating problem first mbp, run hot , designed so, if it's not shutting down due heat, you're go.

open activity monitor, display processes , sort processor usage. show pie graph of memory page ins , outs, we'll go there.
