Windows Home Server/NAS for networked storage ?

my home network has 1 mbp + 3 windows laptop + network printer. want have external storage preferably on network can access machine. thing storage needs secure nobody outside of network able access files storage. can windows home server work mac ?
options ? i've bunch of bare hard drives floating around , love use them in storage.
 

my favorite options synology. has web based os works both macs , windows , can secured pretty if set up. read/write speeds pretty when compared drobo.
