Reinstalling OSX

hey everyone.

i've been having lot of trouble osx. it's slow it's unusable. i've had install couple years , figured reformat computer. happened after installing firefox 4, little snitch, , adobe cs5.5. have no idea if of has major changed after that. (the cs5.5 trial adobe, no piracy here, going expire soon.)

anyways, wondering, if reinstall osx without reformatting, lose? have time machine backup i'm not concerned. i'm not in mood reformat , set again, if new install , not lose amazing. i'm assuming rewrites system files right? documents , apps safe correct?

if perform upgrade install, system files change whereas personal files remain same.
