iMac running slow, no obvious reason

i've got imac late 2006 model, have been using 3 years. month ago started running slow , got spinning wheel. i've upgraded tiger sl , added total of 4 gb ram instead of 1 gb.

week ago went deadly slow, more ever. managed run disk utility , disk permission said "open error 5: input/output error". i've since made 0 out data , installed sl again, should fresh. starting run slow again, using lot of thinking time in safari , lack in itunes. disk permission said airport settings being "80 when should 0". i'm not using airport.
youtube, vimeo etc stops when streamed.

have no idea problem is. haven't tried resetting pram, issue? i've tried deleting "com.apple.audio.coreaudiod.plist"

got ideas?

specs:
imac "core 2 duo" 2.16 20-inch
4 gb ram (probably using 3 gb)
ati radeon x1600 graphics
128 mb of gddr3

that line suggests trouble in river city.

try running console (just type "console" spotlight search bar). within console, @ upper left... make sure it's showing logs, make sure you're clicked on "all messages." now, looking @ console log, scroll few pages (up) , see if see similar errors input/output or bus timeout errors.

fear internal hard drive may reaching end of life.

if you're not backing up, might in trouble. but, suggest trying data backed asap. if hd indeed failing, you'll want replace , restore backup.
