Strange Problem with Software Update...

hi,

have been experiencing problem software update while.

here's how problem went last time happened. before software update mac's hdd space 371.72gb, when update files downloaded, mac's hdd space dropped 371.55gb normal, proceeded update, , computer rebooted (i installed safari 5.0.5 update required reboot along java update). when log in free hdd space remained @ 371.55gb strange, looked software update forgot clean install files surprise not find them anywhere. remedy found safeboot made mac aknowledge space occupied installers indeed freed.

personally, don't understand issue , know safebooting after software update can't permanent solution.
