File Monitor (moving function from PC to Mac help)

hello:

have windows box running in home server ftp, file sharing, media server, etc...

after purchasing first macbook pro february (very happy!), buy new mac mini migrate of functions windows server on mac mini.

before make purchase, ensure can migrate functions on , applications need in order so.

far, comfortable file sharing , ftp on mac. however, have small notification system have put , ask mac experts on how can replicate similar setup on mac os x.

currently, have application running service (file notify) monitors specified folders, specified behaviors.

have small program (sendemail.exe [command line app]) use send email notification called batch file. batch file passes name of file, along directory , sends me email.

example, file notify monitoring "download" folder new file/folder creations. every time new file or folder created under directory, app calls program or batch file run. (in case, batch file.) batch file runs small email application called "sendemail.exe". passes filename & directory values , sends me email using smtp account.

sure there way same setup running under mac osx, maybe easier, have not idea.

i believe it's lot easier under os x i'm not in front of mac tinker right , tell how. i've gotten pretty shell scripts on linux boxes detect new files , perform actions when appear. same done on os x using bash scripts think there easier way. perhaps chance take @ when home. in regard, don't let ability perform actions based on presence of new files stop considering mac. it's do-able.
