New External Drive...Index Volumes?

i got new 1tb external drive , set 2 partitions: time machine , media files. after did spotlight did did not notice, indexing volumes see dot in magnifying lens in top right blinking.

noticed when go spotlight preferences theres yield sign near keyboard shortcut activating spotlight. how fix this? shut down computer lens still blinking , wondering if should've let finish process before did that? damaging computer?

yes, let finish indexing. can start indexing process again. no, won't damage computer or drive.
