Problems with Canon ImageClass MF5880dn All-in-One Printer

hi guys bought all-in-one b&w laser printer canon "imageclass mf5880dn" machine. didn't research before bought it, because took granted "mac compatible" , finder face icon means it's "completely" compatible.

turns out weird it's partially compatible. thing has print/fax/copy/scan , functions available pc either usb or network connection. mac, network functions available print/fax not scan. , if wanna scanning mac have hook mf5880 via usb. can't scan network connection. scanning driver usb driver , doesn't support network connection.

pain. need solution , here questions...

1. there third party software can make scanning function work on lan -- wondering if software can somehow use usb driver work under networked environment?

2. if software angle dead end, guys recommend network print server (a hardware print server)? can hookup all-in-one print server via usb, connect print server lan (either wifi or ethernet ok). , access scanning function of all-in-one via print server, print server makes all-in-one "thinks" it's been hooked mac via usb can machine functional under lan+mac os environment.

3. i'd should've known better. canon makes great products they've never been friendly mac. hp stuffs no longer (quality-wise , hardware performance-wise). , epson doesn't have laser aios. other options have? recommendations mac friendly laser printer all-in-one advanced functions canon 5880dn has?
lot guys.

fyi:

1. canon "imageclass mf5880dn" product page:

http://usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/printers_multifunction/black_white_laser_multifunction/imageclass_mf5880dn#overview

2. mf5880 supports

scanner compatibility: twain, wia
network: tcp/ip v4 , v6, bonjour -- printing , fax

, in particular, following cited specification sheet:

code:
[b]print protocols:[/b] lpd, raw [b]supported network protocols:[/b] tcp/ip v4, tcp/ip v6 (print only), smb; tcp/ip set of application services: arp+ping, secondary dns, dynamic dns [b]network management protocols[/b]: http, snmp v1, wins, bootp, rarp, dhcp, dns, bonjour mib: rfc1213 (mib-11), rfc1514 (host resources mib), rfc1759 (printer mib), canon mib

what did do? have downloaded 3 driver files , installed them in order - printer, fax , scanner. then, go system preferences, print & fax, click + , wait minute. should see printer come up. add it, print test page , restart.

then, go add printer , time after clicking +, wait minute or so. see scanner come up?
