Encrypting/Protecting Backup Disk

sorry if has been asked before (my searches didn't yield info seeking). using file vault on imac internal hdd , have selected "encrypt backup disk" in time machine settings external drive use time machine backups. so, think have protected data in unlikely case imac or external time machine drive stolen. want make , keep backup offsite. if take clean hdd , carbon copy clone of imac hdd, encrypted (since imac hdd encrypted using file vault)? or should format backup drive using encrypted formatting before doing carbon copy clone?

many in advance replies!
