Add Printer window freezing

i installed snow leopard on imac, , have updated 10.6.8 (waiting more ram arrive before can install lion). went print , appeared system had "lost" driver printer. reinstalled driver , opened add printer window. sees printer connected via usb, , found driver, when clicked add button, window froze.

button stays highlighted, , when move mouse on it, turns spinning wheel. can still use other applications (though can't move them in front of add printer window). computer still doesn't recognize printer when try printing. waited half hour , add printer window didn't budge, restarted , tried again. same thing happened.

i've been using printer years , never had problem 10.5 or earlier systems. ideas?
