Stopping The Applying of Privileges To Items In Folder?

i purchased 1 tb portable wd essentials drive plan on using backup. tried copy old time machine backup folder on new drive getting messages ownership. had bright idea apply ownership (me) items held in folder 135 gb worth thinking happen in reasonable amount of time. 2 hours later it's still chugging along.

@ point i'm thinking why not start new time machine folder? don't see way stop system process of applying ownership large number of files. info box open, , message "applying privileges mac 1" (my ext drive). don't want drastic pulling plug on drive. there easy way safely stop process? thanks!
 

6 hours chugging along... should pull plug? :p

update: plug pulled. no adverse effects noticed...
