Flash Diffuser and Exposure Compensation Question

i have canon t2i , have canon ef 70-300mm f/4-5.6 attached canon speedlite 270 ex external flash. question when attach $10 plastic diffuser speedlite, shutter speed shifts 1/100 down 1/2 second in aperture priority mode @ f/5.6. in order compensate, need set exposure compensation -5.0. when this, exposure , color great , natural, doesn't make sense me why adding diffuser affects shutter speed much.

realize camera has flash compensation setting, not find setting kept exposure , colors good. i'll admit don't understand flash compensation differently.

explain going on inside camera wildly on expose photo diffuser? or doing wrong?

in advance.

in seriousness, problem using aperture priority. when comes using flash, need learn use manual. using manual, lets control shutter & aperture, , control exposure compensation. can use iso exposure compensation too. whenever using flash, whether indoors or outdoors, use manual.

ex; indoor photo, looking ambient lights behind subject, start s/s of 1/60th @ 5.6, , check histogram. if dark, cut s/s in half, down 1/30th @ 5.6. check histogram again. if image beginning resemble looking for, not light enough, cut s/s 1/15th. once below 1/15th start referred as, "dragging shutter". doing letting more ambient light in, while still utilizing flash freeze subjects. technique, commonly used in both wedding & night club photography.
