Lion upgrade. Time machine issue?

so today updated lion has gone smooth except for... went go hard drive after doing work in lion. usual booted external hd , got ready hit "back now" did waited around quite time saying "preparing backup" waited , nothing happened unfortunately.

tried later , same issue. i'm stuck problem....

external hd had been backing mac time on osx snow leopard. issue doesn't seem past "preparing backup" phase. normal new operating system , take time on initial backup?

or there problem? have clear hd , re partition set new time machine???
 

hmmm....my time machine/time capsule have been performing expected beginning lion.
