Imac 24" no sound through internal speakers

hi have 24" imac6.1. computer boots normal loud boom noise through internal speakers, when want play music or sound, there nothing happening. volume icon in righthand top corner of screen greyed out.

when check sound in system preferences gives option "digital out - build-in output". no other options.

when plug in external speakers earphone jack, sound. when speaker plug pulled out, see red light coming out of socket mentioned elsewhere on forum.

did plug jack in , out several times without changing.

out there perhaps know how fix on specific imac. ia 24" imac6.1 c2d 2.16 processor, running snow leopard.
