Opinions: Copycat App Idea?

i'm curious hear opinions on issue:
i've been thinking idea mac app (possibly iphone app well) want develop. after doing research online, found website describing in-progress web app similar idea. little signs of recent progress, contacted developer, replied finished project, making slow progress due job.

want continue development of mac app feel might encroaching on "his idea," though not unique. thoughts? have obligation stop own development plans?
 

if think can it, it! if other guy finish app yours better. build great app, , people want it.
