i have clients old imac 4,1 model. having issues beach ball spinning time, airport stopped working, did. tried resetting pram, made no difference. started fixing permissions , found lot of errors. stopped that, booted off sl install disc, tried repair drive, failed, said backup files, reformat , reinstall. when try boot it, white screen apple logo comes , @ bottom of screen there looks long progress indicator, starts show progress , whole machine powers off. sl disc still in machine. not pressing keys during boot. should do? have half mind open up, pull drive, put new drive in, reinstall sl , plug original drive in external copy files back.   take apple. don't try , diy, damage more.   Forums Macs Desktops iMac

i once went someone's house saw them use apple remote , sort of remote app on mac mini following. pressing menu or play button on remote bring sort of root directory (which included several folders had chosen in directory - movies, tv shows, music) - not front row or videos/music stored on itunes/bought via itunes. these folders on mac mini , instead of bringing front row , itunes related music/movies, navigate through list of folders (eg. tv shows > 24 > season 1) until got episode, , click on episode/movie/music file wanted watch/listen, bring list of programs view/listen file (vlc, quicktime, etc etc). once he'd chosen program, file play on program. of done apple remote , mac mini , wasn't front row, different software/app different gui. in fact, small transparent grey box appeared in middle of desktop (not proper window x,- , + buttons) , disappeared once had made selection. me out app/software this done with? many thanks!

hi all. right have old 2008 non-unibody 15" mbp. it's got 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo 3mb l2 cache , 2gb memory. know sucks compared today's standards but, need to. use quite number of things (though 2 or 3 @ time), including email, internet, word processing (as excel, powerpoint, etc.), recording music garageband, video editing/exporting, iphone app development, occasional mac game, , occasional (lightweight) windows game using wine. kind of slow @ points, requiring reboot going again, less imagine. unfortunately, it's taken abuse due lugging around in college, , think it's time buy new one. i'm hoping $100 app store gift card offer. there 2 options me. want 15" screen. so, assuming 500gb 7200rpm hard drive , antiglare screen, same overall price either 2.0ghz model 8gb of memory, or 2.2ghz model 4gb of memory. or, 2.0ghz model 4gb of memory, , save $180. so, more worth it, 200mhz of processing speed or 4gb of memory

so got 180gb vertex 2 ssd, want use boot/osx drive, while keeping current 750gb hdd intact in mac pro, ideal separate /users folder boot drive. if ssd ever dies, still have original hdd boot backup (this hdd volume raid1 made 2 identical hdds). here's prepared: via chronosync copied original boot hdd bootable ssd volume, excluding /users folder (as folder on 400gb). on ssd, created symlink referring /users folder of original hdd, in order keep folder accessible, while being on original hdd. /system /application /library etc folders , hidden files/folders have been duplicated original hdd ssd. selected new ssd drive in systemprefs startup disk, , restart system. here's issue: while being able boot, ssd drive partly being used startup disk. seems lot of system files , application still being loaded original hdd (i can hear that, , notice due lack of performance gain). when examine both volumes via finder, notice ssd volume has path
